After a rainstorm, take your child outside to follow the path of rainwater by dropping ice cubes into a storm drain and watching them flow. Observe the movement and explore where the water goes—through streets, culverts, or into streams.
Materials
You can explore the flow of water without any materials, but ice cubes help children visualize the water's path. Ice cubes are perfect here because they won't clog the storm drain!
Skill Building
This hands-on activity helps children understand water flow in their communities. You can even discuss ways to help, like moving debris, like sticks or possibly litter, from storm drains, which allows the water to flow as needed.
