Activity
Explore maps together! Gather a variety of maps—of local parks, community buildings, forest trails, waterways, and atlases—and let children explore them, discussing what information maps provide.
Once they've become familiar with common map characteristics (title, key, direction, grid), they can make a map of their own! Identify a familiar area, like the schoolyard or neighborhood, and work together to create a 2D or 3D map.
