Activity

Make a class field guide! Give children time to familiarize themselves with what a field guide is by providing a variety of options in the classroom library.

As children learn what information is included in a field guide, they can create an entry for themselves in a class field guide. Provide a template for them to fill in with a picture or drawing of themselves, physical characteristics (eye color, hair color), diet (favorite food), range (city, state), behavior (what they like to do), and an interesting fact.

Connect the diversity found in the classroom to the diversity in nature. How does plant and animal diversity help the natural world thrive? How do our differences make us stronger?
