Activity
Create a sensory path for babies to walk, crawl, or stand on, or touch with their hands or feet. Sensory paths range from permanent installations in the garden or schoolyard to temporary activities that can be packed away when needed.
To create a temporary sensory path, put a layer of natural materials down at the bottom of cardboard boxes, plastic tubs, or directly on the ground. Straw, cotton, water, sand, grass clippings, and leaves are all good options! Allow babies to explore with adult assistance.
Materials
A variety of natural and household materials work well for this activity. Use what you have around or can find nearby!
Skill Building
Walking on uneven surfaces helps babies develop balance and coordination skills while sensory-rich experiences build connections in the brain.
