Activity

Head outside on a sunny day to play shadow tag—tag each other’s shadows to freeze and unfreeze players. Look around—do other things make shadows? Buildings, trees, or plants?

Add a fun twist by moving like different animals and watching how the shadows change. How does a squirrel move? How does a bird move? How does a caterpillar move? Do those movements change the shadows?

Materials

For this activity, all you need is a sunny day! Extend the exploration by using sidewalk chalk to have children trace each other's shadows.

Skill Building
