Activity
Head to the beach or create a "beach in a bin" with play sand from the hardware store or garden center. Provide tools like shovels and buckets, along with natural materials like shells and medium to large stones. Place a small bucket or bin of water nearby. A spray bottle with water will work too!
Materials
This activity can be done at the beach without any prepared materials! As always with babies, watch carefully so they do not ingest anything harmful. If trying it at home or school, be careful to choose natural items that are too big for baby to swallow. Some suggestions:
- Shovels

- Natural items (shells, medium-large stones)
Skill Building
As babies manipulate the sand by squeezing, molding, or compressing it, they are exploring force, cause-and-effect, and having a rich sensory experience.
